Technicoloured Dreams In Hong Kong: A Photo Story

There are few more polarizing destinations than Hong Kong. To some , it’s cosmopolitan, vibrant, and fast-paced; and to others, it can sometimes come across as traditional, antiquated, and somewhat dishevelled.

Personally, I found Hong Kong dizzying; a high-octane city of commerce and culture that has driven the country forward with such pulsating energy. Coming in from Singapore, the landscape felt very new yet familiar at the same time, a dazzling mix of a sophisticated gutsy-ness well intertwined with a sensitive touch to culture. It’s an odd-seeming mix, perhaps; but it’s a definite energy boost on a plate – and whether you’re here for business, to traipse through history, or simply to hunt down those Instagram-worthy spots, you can be sure it’s got all the choice cuts waiting for you to explore.

If I can offer just one tip about photographing Hong Kong (just so you don’t make the same mistakes I did), it’s to keep it simple. I’m really terrible at capturing cities and I find that, when chasing after a landscape as frenetic as this, the more you narrow your creativity by obsessing over specific must-have shots, the more you’re going to miss it.  Besides, most of Hong Kong’s Instagram-worthy spots are likely to be high-profile with everyone – both locals and tourists – and as dilapidated or deserted some places might look, you can be sure you’ll end up having to wait your turn for your frame. Which in my case, always stifles my level of inspiration down to zero.

Hong Kong is very conceptual and very full of emotion – don’t be afraid that you’re missing out just because you missed a couple of prominent places for your ‘gram. Truth is, with a country as warm, wild, and animated as this, technically, everything around the corner deserves a spot on your feed.

Great tips! I think you’ve captured the frentic energy you reference just beautifully. I spent 24 hours in Hong Kong once on a layover and tried running around to capture it…but didn’t do it justice as you have. Thank you for this!
